Hello! You must be here to peruse my bookshelf!
I must alert you: some of these are fairly old and smell great, some have tiny doodles in the corners. :)
This shelf isn't completely taken up by books —there is something strange going on around that glorified ampersand.
Check out some of my all-time favorites from this section!
- The Penland Book of Handmade Books - Master classes on bookbinding from the Penland School of Crafts.
- The Craftsman - An analysis on the connection between the creative hand & mind. It follows the craftsman's place in the medieval guild, during the Enlightenment, and in today's society.
- The Mother Tongue - Packed with juicy facts about the origins and development of the English language. A hilarious book, really!
- Russian Classical Stories for Children - A treasury of the Soviet era. This starkly illustrated book contains tales depressing beyond belief. (I always had the suspicion this book wasn't actually for kids.) Many of us —Perestroika children— were scarred for life by this title. Yaaaay...

What else...? Oh yes!
- Sex and Suits - Focuses on the dynamics of male/female clothing, from the Middle Ages to the late 20th C.
- Tolkien's The Silmarillion.

I'm intrigued by The Crafstman, but all of these sound like they would be interesting! I just finished a book about the first blood transfusions (Blood Work), and it was so fascinating to read more about how people used to think the body worked.
ReplyDeleteAren't you glad we live in the era of anesthesia and antibiotics? I recently read a book about the many ways in which old-time medicine was uninformed. Pretty horrible, but still a fun read —it's a big glossy book with tons of images. :)
Delete"Medicine Perspectives in History and Art", by Robert E. Greenspan.
What a neat idea to chronicles what is on your bookshelves! I love books, I'm trying to think of how many shelves of books I have in our little apartment ... a lot! haha! Thanks for sharing this neat idea! :)
ReplyDeleteWe have so many too! Including a coat closet filled with those we don't particularly adore or want to display on the fancy bookshelves. ;)
